What a load of tosh written about the Democrats death

Probably the best article written in the recent past about the demise of the Democrats is by Peter Van Olsen in today’s Age.  His thesis is that the rot started with Kernot.  He opines that when Kernot shifted from the Democrats to the ALP the Democrat brand was tarnished.  They became just another bunch of pollies.  With the GST Meg Lees became fatally undermined at the worst time.  Stott Despoja felt ready.  When Stott Despoja took the leadership she moved it to the left at a rapid rate of knots.

While Van Olsen’s piece is well written and logical the rot set in well before Kernot.  The Democrats built a solid no nonsence brand under Chip and Haines.  A centre, slightly left, skeptical party of review.  I think they started to lose cohesion and focus under the third and fourth leaders, Janet Powell and John Coulter. Though the party did OK at the ballot box it was a chaotic time.  Also the wackier elements of their social and enviroment policies, led by wackier members, tended to obscure the good work done by the solid members.  I think Kernot righted the ship for a while.

Tracee Hutchinson’s obseqious fawning sister’s are doing it for themselves pap piece in Saturday’s Age is a good Helen Reddy moment and not a bad piece if you read it as a piece of fiction prepared for a undergraduate empowerment class.  Stott Despoja wasn’t a genius operator Hutchinson portrays.  She almost maintained an undergraduate approach to politics, talking in slogans and taking offence at a moment’s notice.  She was a divsive wrecker.  To get to the point where Andrew Murray is ready to bolt is not a sign of leadership.  Student politicians love action and intraparty fights.  In the big house that is just stupid.

And yet Stott Despoja has had a dream run with the press.  Go figure.
