The OAIC has announced its program for the Privacy Awareness Week, 15 – 21 May 2016. Privacy Weeks are part of the activities of most data regulators/privacy commissioners. In New Zealand it is 9 – 14 May 2016. Funnily enough the theme for both privacy weeks is “Privacy in your hands.”
The release provides:
The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has launched its program for Privacy Awareness Week, 15 to 21 May 2016.
‘The theme for Privacy Awareness Week 2016 is privacy in your hands,’ said Acting Australian Information Commissioner, Timothy Pilgrim.
‘For businesses and government agencies this means that privacy is part of good governance and made a key priority. For individuals, it means understanding your rights, making choices and taking charge of your privacy in the digital age.’
The United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur for Privacy, Professor Joseph Cannataci, will be the special guest at this year’s Privacy Awareness Week (PAW). Professor Cannataci will be providing keynote addresses during the week’s events, including at the OAIC’s annual Business Breakfast in Sydney on 16 May and a public lecture at the Australian National University on 17 May.
The OAIC is also calling for public and private sector entities to partner with it to promote awareness on protecting the privacy rights of Australians.
PAW partners are encouraged to promote good privacy practices within their organisations and to their stakeholders. The OAIC has developed a range of resources and materials to assist partners raise awareness during the week.
While welcome, more robust enforcement is better.
