E commerce consumers in Asia Pacific region have little confidence in online security

July 30, 2017 |

Confidence is critical for an economy to function properly.  Traditionally that has meant that confidence that a legal system is impartial and efficient, confidence that contracts are enforceable and that confidence that property rights are secure from arbitrary confiscation.  In the digital economy the other confidence is that data is secure, personal information is not misused and that electronic communication is free from intrusion and unrestrained surveillance.

In a recent Internet Society Survey on Policy issues in Asia Pacific 2017 the results show that there is a distinct lack of confidence in online security.  2,072 people from 40 economies across the Asia-Pacific region answered the survey with 87% were members of the Internet Society, 79% male and 53% were between 15 and 34 years old with another 27% aged 35 to 44 and the remaining 20% were 45 years or older.

Some of the highlights of the survey are:

  • more than 70% of e-commerce consumers do not believe their personal data is properly protected
  • 90% of respondents are uncomfortable with giving their bank details online
  • over 55% of respondents say they are unlikely to use online services if there are no guarantees of their personal information being protected,
  • 85% of consumers said they would like to be told what information is being collected about them
  • the top five concerns across gender, age groups, geography and income groups were cybersecurity, access, data protection, connectivity and privacy.  Women listed internet access as their top policy concern, followed by cybersecurity, data protection, privacy and connectivity.
  • respondents tended to trust traditional services such as banks, public authorities and health institutions over online service providers, the Internet Society said.
  • firms and institutions hold a growing amount of personal data  with 73% of respondents saying they have disclosed information about themselves to banks and financial services, 63% to national public authorities, 55% to e-commerce sites and 51% to online content and service providers.
