Remember, remember the fifth of November….

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot…

Guy Fawkes has a lot to answer for. To be responsible for such an execrable rhyme is deserving of a hanging, drawing and quartering.  Guy Fawkes and that grotesquely slimy (but politically nimble) James I did more to put English Catholisism under the yoke for 200 plus years than the worse depredations of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

What I take from the Gunpowder plot is how easily these plans are undone.  Without iron discipline and an absolute minimum number of plotters the chances of it being discovered is significant. What undid this little adventure was one of the plotters writing to a friend advising him to stay away from Parliament.  It is amazing how people just can’t help but talk.  This is why the grand conspiracies of the twentieth century are nonsensical. Does anyone seriously believe there isn’t half a dozen plus plus gabby scientists at NASA who would have copped to a faked moon landing.  Or the sick proposition of Loose Change that there was a government conspiracy to crash planes into the twin towers.  Governments are just not that competent.  Thank God.

As Keating said, if it is a choice between conspiracy and stuff up pick stuff up every time.
